Scottish Garden Tour

As well as being blessed by an abundant array of fine links and inland courses, Scotland is also renowned for it's beautiful and diverse selection of gardens.

The unique climate and fertile soils of Scotland make the area a horticultural haven and as such there are many gardens worth a visit. Coincidentally many of these are located near key golfing areas which makes a Garden and Golfing tour of Scotland a viable and excellent combined proposition.

DAY 1

Accommodation
Malmaison, Edinburgh

Garden / Sightseeing Option
Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, Edinburgh Castle, Arthur's Seat, Royal Yacht Britannia, Hopetoun House.

On arrival in Scotland a warm welcome awaits you from your Drumgolf representative. You travel to Edinburgh either by executive mini-coach or hire vehicle.

Your first 2 night are spent at Malmaison, located in Leith a vibrant and fashionable part of Edinburgh. The Royal Botanic Garden on Inverleith Row which will serenade you with 70 acres of ornamental gardens, trees and walkways. A true joy in every season. The newly landscaped rock and health garden and the tropical plant houses are now joined by a Chinese garden in which to wander. Watch for the precocious squirrels which are everywhere! There is also a gallery with occasional exhibits and cafe with outdoor terrace for serene afternoon teas.

Lennoxlove House, The Bass Rock, Glenkinchie Whiskey distillery, Heritage of Golf Museum. Golf - North Berwick.

Your first round of golf is at North Berwick, with panoramic views of the imposing Bass Rock on the Firth of Forth this is truly memorable course. Many of it's holes have been impersonated world-wide and the 15th 'Redan' has consistently been rated by Golf Digest as one of the best holes in the world


DAY 3

Accommodation
Gleneagles, Perthshire.

Garden / Sightseeing Option
Drummond Castle Gardens, Caithness Glass visitor centre, Scone Palace.

There's only one Gleneagles. Suitably nicknamed "the playground to the Gods", and the next stop on your tour. While in Perthshire, Drummond Castle Gardens beckon. This is one of the most equisite formal gardens in Scotland.

DAY 4

Kings Course, Gleneagles

The three courses at Gleneagles are blessed with surroundings of awe inspiring beauty reflecting a truly highland landscape. The Kings course was designed by James Braid (a five times Open winner ). When Lee Trevino first played the Kings he memorably remarked "If heaven is as good as this, I sure hope they have some tee times left".

DAY 5

Blair Castle, The House of Bruar, Edradour Whiskey distillery.

Scenic drive to Pittodrie House, Inverurie via Blair Atholl. Blair Castle and Gardens, at Blair Atholl where the fairy tale white castle is matched for beauty by the impeccably maintained gardens sight from the main road and warrants a closer look. Pittodrie is a large mansion house in Aberdeenshire and is graced with an exceptional walled garden in the grounds. A mere 500m from the house and largely unvisited by most of the guests, this secret and sheltered haven is both a kitchen garden and a place for meditation and reflection.

Golf Option
Cruden Bay

Play Cruden Bay. 'Golf World' does not bestow a top 100 rating lightly. Located 23 miles north of Aberdeen, the fact that many golfers will make a significant detour to accommodate this enthralling links is all the recommendation that this course requires. All the holes are memorable but the 15th hole par 3 Blin'Dunt is a favourite.

Afterwards visit Crathes Castle and Gardens. One of the most interesting tower houses whose construction began in 1553 and took 40 years. With fairytale turrets, gargoyles of fantastic design and superb painted ceilings. The ancient Horn of Leys was given in 1323 to Alexander Burnett by King Robert the Bruce. This is all surrounded by exceptional topiary and walled gardens of inspired design and tranquil atmosphere. Keen gardeners will be in their scented heaven. Be sure not to miss the Wild garden beyond the old wall that many people miss.

DAY 7

Garden / Sightseeing Option
Explore Loch Ness and the surrounding area including Culloden Battlefield, Cawdor Castle and Fort George.

Golf Option
Nairn

Nairn is a real testing traditional links whose respected status in the world of Golf is reflected by the fact it was selected to host the Walker Cup in 1999. The quality of the course is matched by an excellent clubhouse and friendly staff.

After Golf, the market town of Elgin is home to the famous Johnstone's of Elgin cashmere and knitwear factory where you will find a beautiful shop and cafe.

DAY 8

Loch Torridon Hotel

Inverewe Gardens, Plockton, scenic drive from Torridon to Applecross.

Travel west to Loch Torridon Hotel. This traditional shooting lodge on a lochside offers supreme Highland comfort surrounded by majestic mountains. Very authentic right down to the peat tinted water.

En route visit the world famous Inverewe Gardens - a must for all garden lovers. First started in 1862, Osgood Mackenzie made it his life's work in 1883 and it continues with large crowds coming to admire his efforts. Helped by the ameliorating effects of the Gulf Stream, the wild garden became the model for many others. The garden enjoys a spectacular setting on the shores of Loch Ewe and, on a latitude more northerly than Moscow, it is a remarkable achievement.

DAY 9

Accommodation
One Devonshire Gardens, Glasgow

Sightseeing Option
Crarae, Glasgow offers many museums, galleries and excellent shopping.

En route to Glasgow visit Crarae, by Inveraray. The famous gardens on the wooded banks of Loch Fyne were landscaped long ago around the gushing glen and are now vast and lush. There are riotous rhododendrons in May, gigantic hogweed in August and arbour after arbour in every season.

Stay at One Devonshire Gardens - set in the heart of a tree lined Victorian Terrace, once the former homes of the merchants and ship owners of Glasgow now the most notable urban Hotel in Scotland.

DAY 10

Journey to Glasgow airport and flight home. Farewell to God's country.
